Summer Tips

Summer Tips

It is finally summertime which means lots of sun! The sun can be fun, but it is always important to make sure you’re aware of the everlasting effects too much sun can have on your body. Here are a few of my favorite tips to make sure you protect yourself from the sun.

derm1. Always apply a SPF daily moisturizer in the morning. I use dermalogicia SPF 50 everyday after cleansing my skin.

2. The Suns UV rays are the strongest between 10am and 2 pm, when the sun is highest in the sky.

3. Plan on being in the ocean a lot? Apply hair oil or conditioner before going on the water to help keep hair silky smooth.

4. Drink before you are thirsty. You may not realize your body is dehydrated, so it is always important to constantly stay hydrated, even if you don’t feel like your thirsty! The more water, the better.

Have some fun in the sun!

Keep in Touch

Hi everyone! Hope all is well!
I know it’s been a bit slow on my end, it’s a super busy semester with classes full time, work, internship and community service!
That being said there may not be as many blog posts as I would like, but of course I’ll try my best to do at least one a week!
If you would like to keep in touch I recommend following my instagram @aroonmelane where I post photos almost everyday!

Custom Designed Longboard Surfboard

Custom Designed Longboard Surfboard

If you follow me on Facebook then you would have seen my new custom painted longboard surfboard!

My father has been surfing for a very long time and I have tried it once or twice before but this summer I really wanted to get into it and it was soooo fun!

After several times of surfing, my father thought it would be best for me to get my own board shaped to best suit myself. Therefore, Peli surfboard out of Cocoa Beach, Fl shaped and did the blue base coat for my board.

The octopus was an idea of mine that came from lots of research on surfboard designs. There was one image of a giant octopus spread out over the entire board, and I loved it!

So I asked my mother, of MADart, to design this amazing octopus. And the final piece is absolutely amazing!

I will try to get some photos of me actually surfing on this board! I have only been able to take this particular board out once, but the board is amazing! Peli did a great job and the artwork is stunning!

My mother used acrylics to paint the octopus, and then the surfboard makers applied several top coats to set everything in.

Traveling by a Float Plane

Traveling by a Float Plane

Today is unfortunately my last day in Alaska, this time tomorrow I’ll be back home in Florida!
But first we had to get out of our secluded little town, and the only way to do that is by boat or float plane. This time we opted for the float plane!
Float planes are fun and different but not when it’s windy and you experience turbulence the whole time. :/
Any day but today would have been a perfect day for a float plane, but we were not that lucky with the weather. Anyways, I snapped a few photos in the plane while trying not to get sick. Ha 🙂20140728-151343-54823795.jpg

As you can see the weather was not the best. But the past couple weeks have been amazing! Can’t wait till next year

Exploring Eagle Island

Exploring Eagle Island

a1

Eagle Island is the little island right across from our Alaskan cabin.

You only have a few hours a day when you can walk to it, and that is when the tide is low.

Every summer I never fail to explore the island and be amazed at all the colorful creatures you find.

I hope you enjoy this little adventure as much as I did

Whenever you find one, you find a ton

One of the main things you find on Eagle Island are thousands of starfish, waiting for the tide to roll back in.

Alaska Tides: High vs. Low

Alaska Tides: High vs. Low

If you did not know, Alaska has extreme high and low tides which alternate every 6 hours. I am always amazed at how fast the water moves, you can literally watch the water as it rushes to fill in.

The tides can have as much as a 19 foot difference some times of the year.

When living in Alaska, especially rural Alaska, you learn the live by the tides. Your whole day depends on when the tide is coming in or going out.

I took some images to show the difference of high and low tides. I did not get the tides when they were exactly at the lowest part or highest part. So the tide can be much more severe then shown.

But you will get the general idea.

Taking Our Cat for a Walk in Alaska

Taking Our Cat for a Walk in Alaska

Today was yet another beautiful day out, therefore we decided it was time to take our 10 year old, 27 pound maine coon mix out for a walk. cat8cat

It takes him a little while to get going and he can not go too far without getting exhausted. But he is too funny when we take him on walks. He usually walks a ways behind us checking every little thing and stopping at the sound of a branch cracking. But once  we get too far away from him he begins to howl until he feels like we are a safe distance from him. I wanted to get close to him when he was howling, so I hid behind a tree as he walked by, calling out to my parents who were too far away for his comfort.

He did not want to go any further then this spot and let us know by laying down not moving a budge

Beach Combing in Alaska

Beach Combing in Alaska

Today the weather was nice and it was time to stretch our legs. So my parents and I made a picnic and did some beach combing. Our main objective is to find a glass ball floating off from the Japan shoreline, but alas we have yet to find one, though many people in our area find them on the rare occasion. Today we found mostly useless items, that may or may not be missed by the previous owner. Either way, we got a fun time while combing the beach.

I usually end up straying from the beach to go down by the water and search for sea creatures. The colors of everything always surprise me every time.
